COMPTON : Teachers Threaten Strike if Salaries Are Cut by 4%

Share

Compton teachers have threatened to strike if the school district goes through with plans to cut their salaries by 4%.

The teachers, members of the Compton Education Assn., approved a strike by an overwhelming vote this week, but have not set a date, union President Margie Garrett said. The union held a demonstration Tuesday at a restaurant parking lot to protest the proposed cuts.

The district plans to use substitutes to keep schools open if the teachers walk out, spokeswoman Arianna Barrios said.

School officials said they asked employees to accept lower wages because of the district’s dire financial condition. The Compton school system was taken over by the state last year after becoming insolvent. Officials laid off 111 non-teaching workers last year.
