Honors for Asian American Students
To recognize the heritage and culture of Asian Pacific Americans, the Los Angeles Asian Pacific American Heritage Committee is announcing a poster and essay contest as well as an awards program for outstanding Asian American students.
Honorees will be awarded certificates of recognition, gift certificates and savings bonds. Last year’s winners received $500 worth of savings bonds, dinner and pizza certificates, T-shirts and more. Three 1993 awardees hailed from San Fernando Valley high schools.
In the essay and poster contest, students of every ethnicity are invited to write a maximum 500-word essay and/or make a poster--minimum 11 by 14 inches, maximum 24 by 35--related to this year’s theme: “Celebrating the Family: Foundation of Our Future.” The deadline for the contest, which is open to students enrolled in kindergarten through grade 12, is April 8.
Davino said the theme was inspired by the United Nations’ declaration of 1994 as the Year of the Family. May is national Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
“It doesn’t have to have an Asian theme,” Davino said, “although if it is, that’s all the better because it’s about Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.”
Prizes for the contest will be scholarships worth $50 to $300. Contest winners and the 10 outstanding Asian American students will be feted at receptions May 11 at the Board of Education patio. The deadline for teachers and principals to nominate students for the academic award is Tuesday.
