COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cal State Fullerton Beats Grand Canyon

Bret Hemphill’s two-run homer in the second inning helped Cal State Fullerton to a 6-2 victory against Grand Canyon in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Titan Field.

Hemphill’s homer, his third of the season, was the big blow of a five-run inning, in which Dante Powell drove in two runs with a double. Hemphill went two for three with three runs batted in. Jeff Ferguson had two doubles.

Matt Wagner pitched eight shutout innings before giving up two runs in the ninth, when reliever Ted Silva came in. Fullerton (16-4) and Grand Canyon (15-7-1) will play at 1 p.m. today and Sunday.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 10-5, La Verne 0-0 (first game 5 innings, mercy rule)--Susan Caton, Bernie Fancuberta and Lisa Simpson each had two-run hits in Chapman’s 10-run first inning in the opening game. Starting pitcher Leslie Gerbin and Caton combined for a three-hitter for the Panthers (14-6).

In the second game, Fancuberta struck out seven in a five-hit shutout. Catcher Renee Hernandez had two hits for Chapman.
