Man Shot, Injured in Encounter With Police
A 26-year-old man was shot and critically wounded by a Los Angeles police officer Saturday after he pointed a loaded revolver at the officer, authorities said.
Fried F. Trinidad, who was shot once in the shoulder, was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, said Lt. John Dunkin.
Trinidad was in critical condition late Saturday, authorities said.
The shooting occurred about 3:40 p.m. near Haskell Avenue and Stagg Street when two Metro Division officers noticed two men standing at the back gate of Easton Aluminum, Inc.
One of the men apparently saw the officers and fled, police said. Trinidad, who is employed at the company, stayed behind and pointed a gun at one of the officers. Trinidad then ran into a lunchroom, where he surrendered to officers, police said.
Officer T. D. Surette, 36, a nine-year veteran of the LAPD, fired the shot that wounded Trinidad. The officer was not hurt, Dunkin said.
Police at first identified Trinidad as a suspected gang member, but later said they were unsure whether the wounded man belongs to a gang.
