SEARCHING HART: With his days in office numbered, 50-year-old state Sen. Gary K. Hart hasn’t the foggiest idea what he’ll do when he retires in December. . . . At a dinner roast in Oxnard on Friday, his staff poked fun at his absent-mindedness: arriving at a tennis tournament without proper shoes, driving off with his briefcase on the car roof. They ended the skit singing the 1970s lyrics “Whatcha’ gonna do when we say goodby, Whatcha’ gonna do when we’re gone.” After the number, his wife, Kari, retorted: “What am I going to do when you’re all gone.”

NAME-CALLING: It’s not in the Latino neighborhood of La Colonia, but the Oxnard City Council has finally pinpointed a street to call Cesar E. Chavez Drive. The only catch: The street has yet to be built. . . . At its meeting today, the council will consider a resolution showing its intention to name a street after Chavez in the planned Northeast Community. . . . About 1,200 residents petitioned the council to honor the famous farm labor organizer who once lived in Oxnard. “We can accommodate them,” said Councilman Thomas E. Holden.

TAX TIME: With a month to go, procrastination has seized unusually large numbers of taxpayers. Requests for forms are unseasonably low. Financial planners report a noticeable slowdown. . . . But computer wizards are working ahead, scooping up software to help them breeze through new tax-law changes. “It’s selling really well,” said Andrew Frueh of Egghead Software in Thousand Oaks. . . . Once a taxpayer punches in the numbers, the software does all of the math.

ECONOMIC MOVES: Boxed in by neighbors, the Weyerhaeuser Co.’s corrugated-box-making plant in Santa Paula is planning to move to a bigger location in Camarillo to expand and add more jobs. (Valley Business, Page 14) . . . Future Automation Inc., a high-tech manufacturer, will double its plant size this week when it moves from Simi Valley to Moorpark. “Business is good and we’re hiring,” said Mike Chicos, Future’s operations manager.
