Arthur Alan Culver, retired president of the Riverside Press-Enterprise newspaper, has died at age 87.

Culver died Sunday after collapsing at his Riverside home, apparently because of heart failure.

A native of Rose, Kan., Culver moved to California in 1930. He became involved with the newspaper after marrying Barbara Joy Hammond, daughter of Harry W. Hammond, then co-owner and general manager of the Press and Enterprise newspapers.

Culver began as advertising manager in 1937, was named general manager in 1949 and became co-publisher with Howard H Hays, the current chairman, in 1965. Culver served as president of the newspaper from 1969 until his retirement in 1984. He remained on the board of directors until his death.

Culver was also president of the board of directors of the Riverside Chamber of Commerce and a leader of that city’s United Way and Salvation Army campaigns.

He is survived by his son, Arthur Anthony Culver of Riverside, and a daughter, Deborah Lawlor of Los Angeles.
