A young man and a dog were killed in a drive-by shooting in a normally quiet neighborhood Thursday night, according to police and neighbors.

Police did not release the identity of the victim Thursday night, but neighbors said they saw the body of a teen-age boy, a crumpled bicycle, and a dead dog laying in the middle of Cliffrose Street about 9:30 p.m. The shooting happened at 8:35 p.m. and appeared to be gang-related, Sgt. Mike W. Zigmund said. He did not know Thursday night whether the victim lived in the area.

Residents of Cliffrose and nearby streets said they heard a single shot, then a car screeching away. Many were shocked that guns and violence had entered their neighborhood.

“I heard it, and I said to my granddaughter, ‘What was that?’ you know, because it sounded like a shot. She said, ‘Oh, it must be just a backfire,’ ” said Betty Hadley, who has lived on Cliffrose since 1963. “It kind of scares you, because this isn’t too bad of a neighborhood. I don’t know, you hear about these drive-by shootings all over, but you don’t think it’s going to happen in your own neighborhood.”
