HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Gallardo Gets Start, Throws a No-Hitter

In his first start of the season, Agoura High’s Cary Gallardo threw a no-hitter and the Chargers beat Van Nuys, 8-0, Thursday in a San Fernando tournament baseball game.

Gallardo, previously used as a closer, allowed four walks, but faced only two batters over the minimum.

Third baseman Chris Cicuto went two for four with two runs batted in for the Chargers (2-4).

Van Nuys (3-5) has been outscored, 22-1, in its last two games. Granada Hills beat the Wolves, 14-1, on Tuesday.

In other San Fernando tournament games:

Thousand Oaks 9, San Fernando 3--Brian Downing threw a one-hitter to lead the Lancers (4-2) past winless San Fernando (0-5).

Downing surrendered the Tigers’ lone hit to Tony Cabrera, who tripled in the sixth inning.

Downing (1-1) had three strikeouts and walked seven. Greg Manera went three for three with two RBIs and Lancer teammates Greg Aguilar and Eric Soliz each had two hits.

El Camino Real 5, South Gate 4--Craig Carlton hit a two-run double with two out in the bottom of the seventh to give the host Conquistadores (5-0) the victory.

El Camino Real trailed, 4-3, but Justin Martin opened the inning with a double and stole third two out later. Joey Maiden then walked on a 3-2 pitch, setting up Carlton’s hit.

Martin, Carlton, Randy Wolf and Matt Tays each had two hits for the Conquistadores, with Tays getting his first home run of the season.

Poly 3, Granada Hills 0--Jerry Delgado (1-0) pitched a three-hitter to lead the Parrots. Outfielder Sam Vizcarra went two for three and scored a run for Poly (4-1). Josh Goldberg took the loss for Granada Hills (4-1).

Monroe 3, Kennedy 0--Viking freshman catcher David Lusk scored Eddie Rojo from second base with a single with one out in the sixth, helping lift Monroe (1-4) to its first victory. Joel Zamudio picked up the save, pitching a hitless two innings.

Birmingham 11, Cleveland 3--Birmingham scored seven runs in the seventh to break open the game. Donnie Wingo hit a solo home run in the fourth and struck out five for the victory. Danny Arnold had two hits and three RBIs for Birmingham (2-3).

In other games:

L.A. Baptist 3, Crossroads 2--Dana Berg led off the game with a home run, drove in another run and scored the winning run for L.A. Baptist (5-1) in a semifinal game of its own tournament.

Berg finished three hits and Matt Hernandez struck out nine and went the distance to pick up his third victory.

North Hollywood 6, Marshall 1--Right fielder Bobby Talamantes went two for two with two walks and teammate Danny Curtin was three for three in the L.A. Invitational game. Huskie starting pitcher Mike Delano went 2 2/3 innings, striking out six while allowing one hit. He was lifted when his arm stiffened.

Camarillo 7, Canyon 2--Jake Spahr was three for three, extending a streak of consecutive hits to six, for the host Scorpions (4-3) in a nonleague game. Spahr had a single, a double, a triple and a walk.

Junior right-hander Ryan Bourget picked up his first varsity victory, striking out eight and scattering five hits.

Village Christian 2, Flintridge Prep 1--Mike Speilman drove in Mike Gallegos to give the host Crusaders (6-1) the victory. Gallegos opened the inning with a double and scored easily on Speilman’s drive to left-center. Rene Abeyta pitched the final inning for his first victory.

Taft 8, Venice 4--Taft scored all of its runs in the first two innings and rolled to an easy Sylmar tournament victory at Taft.

Chad Marriner had two hits and four RBIs to lead the Toreador offense. Mike Ross added two hits for Taft (3-4).

Roosevelt 16, Sylmar 9--Sylmar rallied from a 10-run deficit but fell short in a semifinal game of the Sylmar tournament. Sylmar, which trailed, 10-0, after three innings, scored nine times in the fifth. Jose Palacios had four RBIs for Sylmar (4-3).

SOFTBALL

Thousand Oaks 2, Royal 1--Royal’s Tricia Polhert tripled with two out in the seventh, spoiling a perfect-game bid by Lancer right-hander Jessie Davenport in the Marmonte League game.

Davenport (3-1), who struck out seven, retired the first 20 batters before facing Polhert.

The Lancers (5-1, 2-0 ) scored two runs in the first inning on Allison Bowman’s single and a three-base error. Royal fell to 3-3 and 1-1.

Taft 2, Kennedy 1--Jennifer Taitz (two for three) scored the winning run on Brahna Pastorini’s triple in the seventh inning to lift the Toreadors (6-3, 1-0) past Kennedy (3-2, 0-1) in a Northwest Valley Conference opener.

Nicole Ortiz (5-3) threw a three-hitter with three strikeouts and two walks.

Simi Valley 3, Agoura 0--Sara Griffin (6-0) pitched her fourth shutout, allowing two hits and striking out nine for the Pioneers (8-0) in a Marmonte League game. Nicole Newhart singled in two runs with two out in the first. Griffin went two for three as did teammate Jessica Cunningham.

Santa Monica 2, Hoover 1--After the Vikings scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning, Hoover threatened in the fifth and sixth but could not overcome the Vikings in a semifinal game of the Hoover tournament.

Sylmar 4, Grant 3--With Sylmar trailing, 3-1, and two out in the bottom of the seventh, Michelle Rodriguez ripped a three-run home run to lift the Spartans (3-5, 1-0) past Grant (1-5, 0-1) in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Chatsworth 13, Cleveland 0--Nicole Grizzell threw a one-hitter in a Northwest Valley Conference opener as the Chancellors (4-0) remained undefeated.

Flintridge Prep 14, Buckley 4--Jenny Jackson had two triples for the Griffins in a nonleague game at Flintridge Prep. Buckley committed 15 errors.

Fillmore 5, Village Christian 4--Jeanne Beauchamp had two hits and one RBI for Village Christian in a nonleague game at Fillmore.

Village Christian rallied to tie the score in the top of the seventh, but the Flashes came back with the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Village Christian d. St. Genevieve, 15-8, 15-1, 15-5--Chad Hanson had 10 kills to lead the Crusaders (4-1) in a nonleague match.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Thousand Oaks 108, Camarillo 34, Westlake 17--Kim Mortensen and Amber Randall each won two events to lead the Lancers (2-0, 2-0) in the Marmonte League meet at Camarillo.

Mortensen timed 5 minutes 13.3 seconds in the 1,600 meters and 11:59.5 in the 3,200.

Randall ran 63.9 in the 400 and covered 16 feet in the long jump.

Westlake’s Patricia Gibby won the 800 in 2:24.4 and finished second in the 1,600 in 5:15.3.
