ZAP!: How Your Computer Can Hurt You--And What You Can Do About It by Don Sellers (Peachpit Press: $12.95; 150 pp., illustrated, paperback original). The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 4.4 million Americans suffer from computer-related CTD’s (cumulative trauma disorders). Sellers examines some of the causes of these problems and offers solutions that range from reducing stress to installing ergonomic work stations. Although an interesting overview, “Zap!” is hardly the definitive book on the subject. The chapter on glasses omits the radiation-blocking properties of some plastic lenses; the discussion of lighting mentions problems associated with fluorescent tubes, but fails to assess the merits of incandescent and halogen bulbs.
