Quance, Burton Stand Out at Division I Meet

USC freshman swimmer Kristine Quance of Northridge shattered a meet record and Cal State Northridge diver Dawn Burton made a big improvement on the final day of the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Quance turned in a time of 2:10.69 in the final of the 200-yard breaststroke, taking almost a full second off Dorsey Tierney’s meet record of 2:11.54, set in 1991.

Burton, who is the first Matador diver to compete in the Division I swimming and diving championships, finished seventh in the 10-meter platform diving with a score of 505.20.

Burton’s efforts gave Northridge 12 points, enough for 36th place.

Hockey

The Los Angeles Bullets, a team made up of police officers, will take on the Phoenix Enforcers in a charity hockey game today at noon at Pickwick Ice Arena. Proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Postponements

The Western Athletic Conference doubleheader between Cal State Northridge and Utah scheduled for Saturday at Northridge was canceled due to rain. It will not be rescheduled.

Several junior college baseball games were postponed, with all make-up games scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. at their original sites.

Tennis

Meilen Tu of Northridge reached the final of the Banana Bowl in Sao Paulo, Brazil, by beating Fernando Tsukamoto, 6-0, 6-1.
