Quake Recovery
* “Quake Seen Speeding Recovery of Economy” (March 7) adds an entirely new dimension to the term oxymoron . The “facts” and opinions set forth therein would lead one logically to conclude that to facilitate a rapid and complete recovery, what this economy really needs is for the “Big One” to materialize and totally devastate the entire Southern California area. One salivates in contemplation of the massive assistance for which the survivors might be eligible in the aftermath of that catastrophe.
This kind of reasoning is about on a par with that of the military genius who concluded during the Vietnam fiasco that the only way to save a village was to destroy it.
