COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Titans Beat Wichita State on Late Squeeze

Brian Loyd’s bases loaded suicide squeeze with one out in the bottom of the 13th gave Cal State Fullerton a 5-4 victory over Wichita State Wednesday night at Titan Field.

Wichita State led 2-0 going into the bottom of the eighth before Fullerton’s D.C. Olsen led the inning off with a home run.

Trailing, 2-1, in the bottom of the ninth the Titans were able to tie the score on another home run, this one by Tony Miranda.

Wichita State scored twice in the top of the 12th to take a 4-2 lead but Fullerton tied it in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by pinch-hitter Robert Matos.

Matt Wagner recorded his fifth victory of the year for the Titans.

Miranda had four hits for the Titans (21-5). Wichita State drops to 11-7.

In other nonconference baseball:

Pacific Lutheran 4, Southern California College 3--Pacific Lutheran scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning off Southern California College reliever Augie Pena, who took over for starter Ila Borders.

Borders, who received no decision, pitched six innings, allowing two runs and seven hits, striking out one with no walks.

Pena (1-2) retired the first two batters of the seventh before a single, a bad-hop error by shortstop Jason Brissey and two more singles scored the runs.

Host SCC (9-17), which had seven hits, scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings. Two came on wild pitches and one on a sacrifice fly by Ken Turner.

In the PONY softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 7, Florida State 0--Freshman Trinity Johnson pitched a four-hitter for the Titans in pool play. The Titans (12-16) lost to Northwestern, 9-1, in another pool-play game. The game was shortened to six innings because of the mercy rule.

Northwestern 9, Cal State Fullerton 1 (6, mercy)--Jena Sansone had two hits and two RBIs for Northwestern (12-5).

In women’s tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 5, Georgia Tech 3--Christa Hanson won in singles, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5, then teamed with Jennifer Canfield at No. 3 doubles to win, 6-4, 7-6 for the Titans (5-11). Georgia Tech is 5-10.
