Earthquake-related hazardous waste can be brought to Van Nuys Airport for disposal today, Saturday and part of next week.

Sponsored by Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick’s office, the hazardous waste roundup is by appointment only and applies only to hazardous waste discovered after the earthquake.

“It could be a container damaged in the earthquake and found after people were cleaning up their garage,” said Laura Garcia, spokeswoman for Greenfield Environmental Hazard & Household Waste, which contracts the hazardous waste pickup for the city.

Hazardous waste includes any liquid, solid or gaseous material labeled toxic, poison or flammable. Many hazardous items are found in the household, including cleaning products, pesticides, motor oils and paint.

The roundup will be held today, Saturday and Thursday through April 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each participant will be required to sign a statement verifying that material deposited is waste created by the earthquake.

To make an appointment, call the household hazardous waste hot line at (800) 98-TOXIC or (800) 988-6942.
