LOS ANGELES : Police Union Stands By Plan to Keep Billboards
The tit-for-tat between Mayor Richard Riordan and the Police Protective League continued Friday as union officials insisted that their controversial crime billboards will stay up and a top Riordan aide said the tactic was interfering with the contract talks.
“We would hope that the league would de-escalate this,” said Bill McCarley, Riordan’s chief of staff.
At a negotiating session Friday morning, no offer was presented to the union--a result of Riordan’s decision on Thursday to back off on his salary increase proposal while the union continues with its pressure tactics.
“This is childish, naive and incredibly flawed strategy,” union Pesident Danny Staggs said.
The union said it will hold a meetings with officers in the coming weeks to determine whether to escalate the dispute by distributing a videotape that highlights the city’s crime situation.
