Leaving Southern California damp but largely undamaged, a powerful Alaskan storm departed for Arizona on Friday after dumping up to 1 1/3 inches of rain in the coastal valleys and more than a foot of snow at some resort areas in the mountains.

The chances of more rainstorms for today are decreasing, although there is still a chance of scattered showers, according to Bruce Thoren, a meteorologist for WeatherData, which provides forecasts for The Times.

Despite repeated warnings from the National Weather Service about possible mudslides in areas stripped bare during last fall’s destructive wildfires, most of the storm runoff was contained.

The storm dumped 0.87 inches of rain in Laguna Beach, but the city was spared any major damage, firefighter Knox Tiernan said.

Mud and water closed three lanes of Laguna Canyon Road for about three hours Thursday night. Mud up to two feet deep also surrounded Canyon Auto on Laguna Canyon Road, but did not do any damage inside the business, Tiernan said.

In Laguna Beach, sandbags, hay bales and concrete highway “K-rail” barriers set up along flood-prone hillsides and neighborhoods did their job for the most part and held back mud and water, Tiernan said.

Meanwhile, firefighters kept a 24-hour watch Friday in an emergency command post off Laguna Canyon Road at Canyon Acres Drive, tracking the progress of a second storm system on a computer.

City public works crews, emergency personnel and equipment were stationed in flood-prone areas, and county workers were on standby, waiting for more rain, Tiernan said.

Tiernan said the emergency center would likely stay open until the National Weather Service says the weather front has passed.
