CSUN Was Wise to Spend $15,000 on Maya Angelou

* Having attended the evening with Maya Angelou at Cal State Northridge on March 17, I was shocked to read a letter (March 21) berating the university for paying a $15,000 fee to a visiting poet while classrooms lack the basic necessities.

I applaud CSUN for bringing one of our country’s greatest literary artists to the campus.

The capacity audience, representing every culture and generation, attested to the fact that people at CSUN, surrounded by devastating reminders of the Jan. 17 earthquake, proudly stated their intention not only to recover but also to bring a greater educational experience to their students and the community.

They could not have made a better choice than to spend their funds for the inspiring gift of Maya Angelou.
