Brad Fullmer, one of the Montreal Expos’ top prospects and a former standout hitter at Montclair Prep, might miss the 1994 season because of a recurring right shoulder injury, said Kent Qualls, Montreal’s director of minor league operations.
Fullmer is scheduled to be examined Wednesday by the club’s team physician in Montreal, Qualls said. Fullmer said he also plans to see noted orthopedist Dr. Frank Jobe next week.
“It looks like he’s going to have to have surgery of some type,” Qualls said. “(Missing the season) is a possibility I couldn’t rule out. We are hoping for the best.”
Fullmer, a third baseman, said he had been bothered by shoulder problems since last summer and the pain finally became so bad that he underwent a magnetic resonance imaging exam last week.
Fullmer, 19, was selected by the Expos in the second round of the amateur draft last June. He signed for a $417,500 bonus, the largest ever awarded to a second-round pick.
Baseball America magazine recently ranked him the fourth-best prospect in the Expos’ system and the 67th-best prospect in baseball.
