LOS ANGELES : Deadline Today to Apply for Quake Jobless Aid Program

Share

Today is the last day for residents put out of work by the Northridge quake and aftershocks to file federal disaster unemployment relief claims.

Those who file after March 31 must show “good cause” why their Disaster Unemployment Assistance relief claims were late, said state Employment Development Department spokeswoman Suzanne Schroeder. Federal disaster relief is available for those who cannot get regular unemployment insurance, she said.

The DUA is similar to regular unemployment insurance in terms of benefits (which range from $40 yp $230 a week) and duration (26 weeks), but differs in eligibility requirements.

The federal assistance is available for those who were self-employed or were to begin working and were unable to do so because of the temblor.

Self-employed residents filing DUA claims at any EDD office should bring tax returns, affidavits from individuals having knowledge of their business or any other evidence to verify the self-employment.
