MUSIC NOTES : 3 Teens Win Scholarships

Kristine Remigio, 17, of Santa Ana won top honors in the pop vocal division of the sixth annual Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards competition earlier this week at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Kristine, a student at Irvine High School, won $5,000.

Jack Maher, 18, who lives in Yorba Linda, was the second-place winner in the category. Maher, a student at Esperanza High School, won $2,500. Brenda Jones, 15, also of Yorba Linda, won second-place in the classical instrumental competition. Brenda, a pianist at Esperanza High School, won $2,500.

The three Orange County students were among 12 finalists from Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara and Orange counties who competed in six categories. A total of $45,000 in scholarship money was awarded.

SUMMER SOUNDS: The Pacific Symphony will play two summer concerts at Pearson Park Amphitheatre in Anaheim on July 24 and Sept. 4, in its second annual outing at the 2,000-seat outdoor venue.

The July 24 program will include Beethoven’s “Wellington’s Victory” and Symphony No. 8, and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, with soloist Meng-Chieh Liu.

The Sept. 4 program will include excerpts from Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess,” Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” and other works. Soloists will include soprano Geraldine McMillian and baritone Peter Lightfoot. The William Grant Still Chorale also will sing.

Both concerts are to be conducted by Carl St.Clair. Tickets for each are $15 and go on sale on June 1. Information: (714) 755-5799.
