Ailing Quance Second at U.S. Championships

Kristine Quance of USC came up short in a bid to win the eighth national title of her career in the U.S. Swimming Championships at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash., on Friday.

Quance, a freshman from Granada Hills High, finished second in the 400-meter individual medley. She won the 200 breaststroke Thursday.

She swam despite having an upper respiratory infection, and her time of 4 minutes 45.50 seconds left her well behind Allison Wagner, a 16-year-old from Eastside High School in Gainesville, Fla., who timed 4:43.08.

Football

Cal State Northridge has signed its 10th high school football recruit of the year. Paul Sipper (6-foot-4, 245 pounds), an offensive lineman from St. John Bosco High in Bellflower, will be among a list of 17 newcomers next season. The list includes six junior college transfers and one four-year college transfer.

Other high school recruits include Jeff Bodholdt (defensive lineman, Irvine), Marty Crowder (offensive lineman, Hart), Dan Lazarovits (defensive lineman, Taft), Chris Ohman (offensive lineman, Diamond Bar), Shane Shafer (linebacker, Hart), Pete Silvey (linebacker, Mater Dei), Jason Sweet (linebacker-tight end, Estancia), Steven Vlasic (tight end, Thousand Oaks) and Joseph Webster (offensive lineman, Claremont).

Junior college transfers include Anthony Fernandez (defensive lineman, Citrus College), Tom Narey (offensive lineman, Gavilan), Virgil Nelson (defensive lineman, Citrus), Albert Contreras (linebacker, Valley), Mike Greslie (linebacker, Valley) and Joe Pierro (linebacker-safety, Fresno City).

Mark Venturine, formerly of Crespi High, has transferred to Northridge from Oregon State.

Area high school football standouts Leon Blunt of San Fernando and Vince Carthron of Kennedy have been selected to play in the Down Under Bowl in New Zealand this summer and are seeking sponsors to defray traveling expenses.

They will play for the California all-star team, which is scheduled to play two games in New Zealand.

Basketball

Hart senior Cody Patterson, who led the Indians to a 21-2 record and the Foothill League title, has made an oral commitment to Brigham Young. Patterson’s mother, Ann Patterson, said her son will walk on next season then serve a two-year Mormon mission.

Patterson, a 6-6 center who was visiting Provo, Utah, Friday, averaged 15.2 points and 7.9 rebounds.

Patterson is one of 10 area players among 30 selected to the All-Southern Section Division I boys’ team by the Amateur Athletic Foundation. First-team selections include Jason Hartman of Thousand Oaks, Richard O’Neill of Crescenta Valley, Al Lairson of Palmdale and Pharoah Davis of Highland.

Chosen to the second team were Brock Jacobsen of Crescenta Valley, Greg Minor of Canyon, Derrick Barker of Antelope Valley, Jerome Payton of Palmdale and Robbie Knight of Buena.

Steve Aylsworth of Westlake was a second-team Division II pick.

Tennis

Erin Boisclair of Agoura Hills defeated Aubrie Rippner of Chico, 6-2, 6-0, to win the girls’ 16-and-under championship of the PowerAde Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships in Miami.

In boys’ 16s, twins Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo were eliminated in the semifinals. Mike Bryan, seeded No. 3, lost to top-seeded Kevin Kim of Fullerton, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

Bob Bryan, seeded fourth, was upset by No. 6 Michael Russell of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., 6-0, 6-2.
