SANTA ANA : Shelter for Women, Kids to Be Dedicated

Share

Dedication ceremonies for the Mercy House Transitional Living Center, a shelter for homeless single women and children, will be held Tuesday.

The dedication marks the completion of a $300,000 renovation and expansion of the historic two-home facility in Santa Ana by HomeAid Orange County. HomeAid is the Building Industry Assn.’s nonprofit program to help the transitionally homeless.

The center will house 25 single women and children for an average of six months. The shelter will assist its residents economically, emotionally and spiritually to help them become contributing members of the community again, organizers said.

“Single mothers and their children are the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population in Orange County,” said Kermit Dorius, HomeAid shelter liaison for the project. “The addition of the Mercy House will give significantly more homeless mothers and children in our community a safe, clean place to stay.”

The project, which took more than a year to complete, resulted from the efforts of more than 1,000 volunteers, including framers, plumbers, electricians, architects and roofers.

The event, which includes a ribbon-cutting ceremony, guided tours and buffet lunch, begins at 11 a.m. at the shelter, at 1505 and 1509 Bush St.
