ANOTHER DELAY: Just last week, NASA gave Canoga Park’s Rocketdyne credit for making improvements after problems caused several space shuttles last year to be delayed. Well, it’s happened again. This Thursday’s launch had to be switched to Friday to inspect Rocketdyne’s oxygen turbo pumps. . . . But Rocketdyne doesn’t seem alarmed. “We expect another flawless flight,” a spokesman said. “We are going to launch.”

FAST WORK: We were supposed to be without full use of the quake-damaged Santa Monica Freeway for many months, but Gov. Pete Wilson said Tuesday it will reopen next week, possibly Monday (A1). . . . Unfortunately, however, work on the bridges near the Antelope Valley and Golden State freeways won’t be fully completed until early fall.

PUBLIC FIGURES: The press just can’t seem to leave CSUN softball stars Amy Windmiller and Shannon Jones alone. This week, it’s Sports Illustrated’s turn to write a feature about how the two ex-Northridge Meadows roommates (above) survived the Jan. 17 earthquake. . . . “Everyone wants a story,” Jones said. (C8).

CATHOLICS: The Valley, like much of L. A., is a melting pot for many cultures. But among Christians, Catholics represent the largest single denomination--28%--sending 22,953 students to 58 parochial and private schools in what is known as the San Fernando Pastoral Region. . . . Bishop Armando X. Ochoa oversees 48 parishes, mostly in the Valley (B5).

NO BRONSONS: Wanted: Volunteers to help fight crime. But, please, no vigilantes. That’s the message from a new anti-crime surveillance group in Van Nuys that aims to help police catch taggers, drug dealers, and other less-than-model citizens. No weapons are allowed. . . . “All they are allowed to do is have a radio, call in what they see and the chase cars do the work,” said the group’s president (B2).
