REDONDO BEACH : Rejection of Pet Law Puts Man in Hog Heaven

Share

Kyle Kazan was fuming.

The owner of a pot-bellied pig had read in a local paper that Redondo Beach was considering a ban on the animals this week. So he hoofed down to the council chambers Tuesday night determined to raise a stink.

“They’re not smelly animals, they’re not loud,” Kazan told the council. “Your dogs will bark much louder than pigs can oink.”

Mindful of his concerns and those of other pet owners, the council Tuesday rejected a proposed law that not only would have banned more pigs, but also would have prohibited anyone from owning four or more pets (an aquarium would have counted as a single pet).

Kazan, who walks his pig Oink through town at least once a week, was in hog heaven.

“I’m not very political, but I felt I had to come down because they were picking on pigs,” said Kazan, 27.

City officials said they will handle future pet problems on a case-by-case basis.
