Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : D.A. Asked to Review Voter Rolls

The Lancaster city clerk’s office has asked the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office to review the voter registration records of about a dozen people who may have used phony addresses to qualify to vote in next week’s election, city officials said.

City Clerk Barbara Howard, who began a review on Wednesday, became suspicious when she recognized at least two of the addresses used, said Nancy Walker, a city spokeswoman.

One of the addresses used to register belonged to a business and the other was of a residence known to Howard, Walker said.

“We’re asking the district attorney to investigate and prosecute if he finds violations of the law,” Walker said Thursday.

The April 12 election will fill three open City Council seats from a field of 12 candidates, Walker said. In the 1992 election, 12,270 ballots were cast, representing about 30% of the registered voters in the city, which has about 108,000 residents, Walker said.

The city did not release the names of the people who are the subjects of the investigation.
