PLACENTIA : Councilman to Serve on Base Reuse Panel

Share

The City Council this week decided to send Councilman Michael L. Maertzweiler as its representative to the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority Executive Council.

Orange County Supervisor Thomas F. Riley asked the city to appoint a council member to the Executive Council, which will serve as an advisory board to the nine members of the planning authority.

Mayor Norman Z. Eckenrode and several other council members had expressed concern about the voting structure, which gives the five supervisors, three representatives from Irvine and one from Lake Forest each one vote.

Members of the Executive Council will not vote on how the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station is to be used when the military moves out in 1999.

Being on the Executive Council “gives us a voice, but does it give us a vote?” Councilwoman Carol Downey asked.

City Administrator Robert D’Amato said by sending a representative, the city would have a vote on what the executive council recommends to the planning authority, but that vote would not be binding.
