Union Official Cuts Ties With Her Political Firm

SACRAMENTO — Alice Huffman, political director of the state’s largest teachers union, has agreed to cut her ties with a political consulting firm she owns, according to an announcement made late Friday by the California Teachers Assn.
Huffman has been at the center of a conflict-of-interest controversy within the group since it was revealed last month that a political action committee she helped form had accepted $175,000 from the gubernatorial campaign of Democrat Kathleen Brown. The money was paid to Huffman’s committee to help woo black voters and the committee often retains Huffman’s public affairs firm for campaign services.
In a brief statement, the teachers union’s board of directors said “there is nothing to support a charge that Alice Huffman or any (other) CTA staff person acted inappropriately” with regard to its procedures. Huffman, who has been on vacation, will resume her duties Monday.
No further details were spelled out in the release and union President D.A. (Del) Weber was unavailable for comment.
