COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Monson Wins, but Irvine Finishes Last

Laura Monson of UC Irvine won the 3,000 meters in a personal-best 9 minutes, 49.54 seconds as UCI finished last in a three-way track meet Saturday at UCLA.

Monson also finished third in the 1,500 (4:41.09). The Anteaters finished with 19 points, behind UCLA’s 97 and Cal State Northridge’s 52.

UCI’s 400-meter relay team of Cori Evans, Toby Dean, Jamie Karrer and Pam Kurtela finished second, in 47.38.

The men’s team also finished third, behind UCLA’s 98 and Northridge’s 76.

In Big West Conference softball:

San Jose State 3-1, Cal State Fullerton 1-5--Teresa Stippey had two hits, scored once and drove in three runs. Traci Fischer had three hits and scored one run to help lead Cal State Fullerton in the second game.

Garces added a triple and Laurie LoForti had a double and scored in the first game for the Titans (17-23, 6-6). San Jose State is 23-20, 4-10.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Point Loma Nazarene 5-0, Southern California College 3-11 (second game 5, mercy)--Angie Vega was four for five with two RBIs and two runs scored in the two games for SCC (29-7, 7-2). Shannon Moreno had three hits and three runs scored in the second game.

Beth Howard (14-3) pitched her ninth shutout in the second game, giving up four hits. In the first game, SCC’s Shannon Saylor (14-4) had a 45-inning scoreless streak broken. Point Loma is 16-10, 2-6.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Point Loma Nazarene 8, Southern California College 1--Jeff Pena rallied to tie the first set, then rallied from a 6-1 deficit in the tie-breaker to win, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 6 singles for Southern California College (8-14, 0-7). Point Loma improved to 8-10, 6-1.

In nonconference tennis:

Fresno State 4, UC Irvine 3--Chris Tontz won, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, at No. 1 singles, then teamed with Carlos Bustos to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, for UC Irvine (11-9). Marc Tardif won, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, and Neil Castro won, 6-2, 6-4, for the Anteaters. Fresno State is 14-6.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, UC San Diego 2--Chad Milling and Evan Alexander each had 19 kills to lead UC Irvine (2-17, 1-15) to an 11-15, 8-15, 15-10, 15-8, 15-6 victory, its first in the conference this season.
