“Apparently, people really do like to mail late,” said Terri Bouffiou, spokeswoman for the United States Postal Service. “We encourage them to mail early to avoid the rush, but we want to be there to serve their needs if they are late, so we attempt to have as many places open as necessary.”

The heaviest traffic arrives between 5 and 10 p.m., she said. “Some people actually tell us they don’t start until after work, and get to the post office by 10. Some come in and pick up forms that night,” she said. “There’s always a big rush on applications for extensions.”

Post offices offering window service until 10 p.m. are: Santa Ana North Grand Station, 2201 N. Grand Ave.; Santa Ana Main Office, 3101 W. Sunflower Ave.; Placentia Post Office, 1400 N. Kraemer Blvd.; Newport Beach Post Office, 1133 Camelback St.; and Orange Post Office, 1075 N. Tustin St.

Offices with window service until 9 p.m. are the Costa Mesa Post Office, 1590 Adams Ave. and the Huntington Beach Post Office, 6771 Warner Ave.

Offices with window service until 8 p.m. are Laguna Niguel Post Office, 29911 Niguel Road; Mission Viejo Post Office, 28081 Marguerite Parkway; Irvine Post Office, 15642 Sand Canyon Avenue; and Irvine Harvest Station, 17192 Murphy Ave.
