SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Weed-Abatement Effort Underway

Share

Property owners who have received weed-removal notices have until May 19 to clear their land, city officials say.

A hearing will be held on that date for property owners who want to appeal the notice.

After that, city work crews will begin clearing the properties of those not complying and not exempted. The city will charge for the work on property tax bills.

Officials say the work must be done before the start of the fire season.

The weed-abatement program targets overgrown vegetation such as sagebrush, shrubs, poison oak or dry grass.

In addition to being a fire hazard, weeds also pose health problems for allergy sufferers and are a visual blight, officials say.

The abatement program extends to trash as well as weeds.

Property owners were notified in January of the impending weed-abatement drive. Official notices were sent earlier this month.

The May 19 public hearing will be at 5 p.m. May 19 at City Hall, 32400 Paseo Adelanto.
