OXNARD : County Moves on Cleanup at Airport

Share

Ventura County will spend $264,712 to clean up hundreds of gallons of fuel that leaked from underground tanks used by a now-defunct helicopter firm at the Oxnard Airport, the Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday.

The fuel seeped into ground water not used for drinking around the helipad owned by Condor Helicopters and Aviation Inc.

Officials believe that the leaks occurred between 1966 and 1986, when the company leased land from Ventura County at the airport on Patterson Road near West 5th Street.

In 1990, the county filed suit against Condor Helicopters ordering it to pay damages. The suit is expected to go to trial soon.

In the meantime, board members agreed to move forward with cleanup efforts to prevent the fuel from leaking into the nearby Oxnard Aquifer, used for drinking water.
