Brocco, the winner of the Santa Anita Derby and the early co-favorite with Holy Bull for next month’s Kentucky Derby, was pronounced in excellent condition by his trainer Tuesday.

“Everything’s fine,” said Randy Winick, Brocco’s trainer. “We walked the horse for about 45 minutes today, he’s fine, he’s great.”

Brocco was placed on the state veterinarian’s restricted list Sunday. B. William Bell, the state veterinarian at Santa Anita, said Brocco was favoring one of his front legs after Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby.

Horses on the restricted list are not allowed to work out for five days and after that can race only if they show they have recovered.

“I never planned on a workout here,” Winick said. “I planned originally on three workouts in Kentucky before the (Derby on May 7). That plan still holds. If he worked here, it would have been four. Right now, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the horse.”

Kentucky veterinarian George Mundy will assess Brocco’s condition after his first strenuous work. If Mundy rules that the horse is fit, that will satisfy California requirements, and Brocco will be removed from the restricted list.

The field for Saturday’s $500,000 Blue Grass Stakes added Mahogany Hall, but lost Game Coin. Game Coin, second in the Louisiana Derby, has been sidelined because of a wrenched ankle and slight hoof injury, trainer Gary Jones said. Mahogany Hall is coming off a sixth-place finish in the Jim Beam Stakes at Turfway Park on April 2.

Warn Me might join the Blue Grass field. Trained by Alfredo Callejas, Warn Me hasn’t started this year. He raced eight times in 1993, including seven starts in France, and won five races.

Holy Bull, a winner of six of seven lifetime starts, is expected to go off as the Blue Grass favorite. The probable field also includes Valiant Nature, Kandaly, Chimes Band and Bonus Money.

Ron Lamarque, owner of Kandaly, said his horse also will be entered in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on Saturday. “We’re entering him there as a precaution in case there’s an off track at Keeneland,” Lamarque said.

It has been raining at Keeneland for several days.

Remington Derby winner Smilin Singin Sam will run in the Kentucky Derby.

The 3-year-old won Saturday’s Remington Derby at Remington Park by 2 3/4 lengths. Silver Goblin, the favorite, finished third.

Silver Goblin will run in the Arkansas Derby on April 23. Blumin Affair, the runner-up Saturday, will run in either the Arkansas Derby 23 or the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on April 24.
