The Seattle SuperSonics must have seemed like the Clippers’ worst nightmare in becoming the first team in NBA history to have 10 double-figure scorers in one game as they recorded the highest point total of the NBA season in a 150-101 rout on Thursday night.

Detlef Schrempf scored 21 points to lead the scoring barrage for the SuperSonics, who moved a step closer to clinching the best record in the NBA.

Clipper Coach Bob Weiss called two timeouts in the first four minutes of the game. That didn’t slow down the SuperSonics, so Weiss left early when he was called for two technicals by referee Tommy Nunez and ejected with 6:31 left in the first quarter.

The SuperSonics blanked the Clippers for 6:22 of the first half as Seattle went on a 17-0 run, stretching a 34-15 lead to 51-15 before Mark Jackson’s basket.

The SuperSonics, 2 1/2 games ahead of Houston for the best record in the league, used a 33-5 run over an 11-minute span of the first and second quarters to build a 78-42 halftime lead. The Clippers never got closer than 30 afterward.

The point total was the most since the SuperSonics scored 154 in a five-overtime loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Nov. 9, 1989. The previous high in the NBA this season was 146 by Golden State against Minnesota on April 1.

Terry Dehere scored 22 points for the Clippers.

The others in double figures for Seattle were Vincent Askew with 18, Shawn Kemp with 17, Kendall Gill with 16, Chris King with 15, Gary Payton with 14, Michael Cage and Nate McMillan with 12 each, Steve Scheffler with 11 and Ervin Johnson with 10.

The Philadelphia 76ers had nine players in double figures on Dec. 30, 1977 against Washington.

“There’s a lot of good players that don’t get much of an opportunity to play,” Seattle Coach George Karl said. “Sheff (Steve Scheffler) was great out there.”

Sheffler’s layup on a feed from Chris King with 8.4 seconds left made him the 10th SuperSonic to score in double figures. His teammates had told him to get open.

Seattle also had 20 steals--six apiece by McMillan and Payton--and scored 24 points off 25 Clipper turnovers.

Seattle shot a season-best 62% from the field in winning its 13th game in 14 outings. The SuperSonics equaled their season high with 41 points in the third quarter when they made 18 of 25 from the field.

“We knew that if we had a good start, they might fold it up and go home early,” Schrempf said.
