BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Wanted: One Left-Handed Reliever
Fred Claire, Dodger executive vice president, said Sunday that he is looking for a second left-handed reliever.
“I don’t see anything as immediate as today, but the bullpen is something we need to look at . . . with Gary (Wayne), it’s too early to judge, and it’s tough also when you are the only left-hander,” Claire said.
Claire said he is happy with Roger McDowell, often the subject of trade rumors. Last season, Pedro Martinez took over McDowell’s role in the bullpen, and this season, Darren Dreifort has had the bulk of the work.
“I am very pleased with Roger,” Claire said. “I am pleased with his curveball, and Roger has also been effective against left-handers.”
Claire said the club might carry 12 pitchers. But the Dodgers have considered sending Chan Ho Park to double-A San Antonio, where he would get more work. Park has pitched four innings in two games, and has a 11.25 earned-run average.
