As part of a federal effort to help the nation’s capital deal with violence and illegal drugs, 18 National Guard members have begun working with the city’s Police Department. The Guard members will perform administrative and technical duties, such as firearms identification and data processing, to free more police officers for street duty. Police Chief Fred Thomas said the Guard’s presence will allow the department to put about a dozen more officers on the streets.
