Former Coach Sentenced for Lewd Conduct : Courts: Sixty-day jail term, three years’ probation given after he pleads guilty to misdemeanor charges.

FULLERTON — A former Savanna High School wresting coach was sentenced to 60 days in jail and ordered to undergo counseling after pleading guilty to misdemeanor child annoyance and lewd conduct charges, a prosecutor said Thursday.

Tom Caspari, 31, of La Palma, will begin serving his sentence June 6 and will be on three years’ probation after his release from the Orange County Men’s Jail, said prosecutor Mark Logan.

North Orange Municipal Judge Carla M. Singer also ordered Caspari to avoid contact with the two teen-age boys named in the complaint, and to refrain from any contact with minors without another adult being present.

The charges relate to sexually explicit language Caspari used in front of the two teen-agers, officials said.

Caspari, who was sentenced Wednesday, had pleaded guilty March 1, Logan said.

Prosecutors wanted Singer to additionally order Caspari to pay the costs of his victims’ counseling, but the judge declined to do so, Logan said.

“We are extremely disappointed restitution was not ordered,” he said.

Caspari’s attorney did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Caspari coached the Rebels for six years and had one of the county’s most envied wrestling programs. Savanna won the Southern Section Division 3-A title in 1991 and won or shared four consecutive Orange League titles. He also coached the boys’ cross-country team and the school’s club surfing team.

Caspari resigned at the end of the school year last June during an Anaheim Police Department investigation into the allegations, made earlier in the term.
