WIND RIDER: You’ll see more than sailboats racing today in the Newport-Ensenada Yacht Race (B1). Lanee Butler, 23, of Dana Point, a windsurfer in the 1992 Olympics, will be windsurfing the 125-mile distance. She’s doing it to raise money to go to the 1996 Olympics. . . . “It’s probably going to take 20 to 30 hours,” she says. “I can’t keep up with the best boats, but some won’t make it until Sunday, so hopefully I’ll beat a few of them.”

HAPPY TRAILS: When aerospace engineer Ken Croker started mountain hiking 22 years ago, there were just two Orange County trails. Now, thanks to Croker and others in the Sierra Club, there are 20 trails. . . . Saturday, the club makes its 200th trail maintenance trip--repairing damage from storms or neglect--by working the Morgan Trail just off Ortega Highway. Anyone healthy is welcome to come along. Says Croker: “We think if people can use the land, they might care about it more.”

NEW BARBIES? Golden West College spokeswoman Wendy Weber knows about roles changing for women: “When I was little, my Barbie doll went shopping. My 4-year-old daughter has a Barbie doll, but she says hers is going to a meeting.” . . . Weber is one of seven women speaking on the subject at a Women in Leadership Conference today at South Coast Plaza Village. Weber says the challenge is to juggle a career, motherhood and community service: “We don’t use the term ‘superwoman’ anymore. Now we just do it.”

FAMILY TIES: It was Kathleen E. Faley who suggested to her brother Dan in 1986 that he propose special games for the developmentally disabled as a class project at Cal State Fullerton. It started with 90 youngsters. Today’s campus event--named for Kathleen, killed in a car accident in 1987--will draw 840. . . . “It’s become a family affair for us,” says John Faley of Placentia, Dan’s father. “But a lot of great people are helping.” One is Rams quarterback T.J. Rubley, who hosts the barbecue to follow.
