Celes King III, a prominent activist and businessman beaten during a street robbery in the Wilshire district before dawn Thursday, remained in serious but stable condition Friday night at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, hospital officials said.

The 70-year-old bail bondsman--head of the state Congress of Racial Equality and former president of the Los Angeles Human Relations Commission and the Los Angeles chapter of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People--suffered severe head wounds and other injuries in the attack, the hospital said.

Police said King was beaten and robbed of an undetermined amount of cash somewhere between his home in the Country Club Park area and the corner of 3rd Street and Ardmore Avenue. He hailed a taxi after the attack.
