ANAHEIM : Laid-Off Employees Eligible for Training
About 300 Anaheim workers laid off from two prominent defense industry employers are eligible for a $1-million federally funded job-training program run by the city.
Workers let go from Rockwell in Anaheim and Lucas Western-ATD can obtain services including job search assistance, basic education, occupational classroom training, on-the-job training and supportive services such as transportation and child-care assistance.
Even though Lucas Western is in the City of Industry, it is still eligible for the program since it employed a substantial number of Anaheim residents.
The grants are intended to help workers who were victims of extensive cutbacks in defense spending.
The training program officially started in February and will last until Aug. 31, 1995.
“The idea is to get people retrained and back into the work force,” said Ruben Aseves, head of planning and contracts for Anaheim.
The City Council voted 3 to 0 earlier this week to approve an agreement with the state to start the program.
Under federal funding rules, Anaheim had to apply for the funds through the state Employment Development Department.
