ALL-STARS: With March Madness just a memory, it’s time for our annual look at Valley all-stars in boys’ and girls’ basketball. And what a season it was. It had everything. . . . There was the courage of Crescenta Valley Coach John Goffredo, who, mourning his wife, took his team to the finals. And the character of Alemany High’s Samantha Rigley, who always came through in the clutch (C17, C18).

FOR THE BIRDS: We don’t know exactly how business is doing at the Valencia Jeep Eagle dealership, but it certainly meets the needs of a few birds. The showroom was hit in the quake and requires repair. But it will wait because a pair of sparrows are building a nest at the wrong spot. . . . “We didn’t want to destroy somebody’s home,” the sales manager said (B11).

DEDICATED: Modern technology has allowed many people to work from home. Just give them a fax and computer, and leave them alone. Well, believe it or not, you can work from your hospital bed too. Just ask Gary Becker (above). The Agoura businessman brought his communication toys to Valley Presbyterian while recovering from a motorcycle accident (B4).

FREEBIES: Commuting around here is a royal pain in the . . . well, you know where. But for some Antelope Valley commuters next week, at least the pain won’t be in the pocketbook. Transit officials will offer free rides on three train routes from Monday to Friday. . . . Of course, they hope to gain from their generosity. Ridership has been low, and this might bring more regulars on board (B11).

DEBATABLE: Don’t call Valley Presbyterians passive. They’ve told national leaders that it wasn’t a good idea to give money to a controversial women’s conference last year, and they want an investigation (B13). . . . But, in fact, the group rejected a more severe response during a long but “decent” debate. Said the moderator, a woman pastor from Acton: “There was no name-calling.”
