The Boston Bruins have fired 102 shots at goaltender Patrick Roy of the Montreal Canadiens in their last two playoff games.

They have three goals and two losses to show for it.

Roy, hospitalized because of appendicitis until Saturday, stopped 60 shots and Kirk Muller scored with 17:18 gone in overtime as the Canadiens defeated the Bruins, 2-1, on Monday night at Boston to take a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

On Saturday in Game 4, Roy came out of the hospital to stop 39 shots and defeat the Bruins, 5-2.

“I guess we need 80 or 90 shots to get that other goal,” Boston defenseman Glen Wesley said. “We outplayed them again. We carried the play in their end. What else can we say?”

Roy made three fabulous saves just before Muller’s winner, stopping the Bruins on a sustained flurry in front of the Montreal net.

“They had quality chances, but we had Patrick,” Montreal Coach Jacques Demers said.

Muller backhanded a rebound of a Patrice Brisebois shot over Bruin goalie Jon Casey for the winner.

Pittsburgh 3, Washington 2--Playing before 15,044 at Pittsburgh, their smallest home crowd of the season, the Penguins rallied from a 2-1 second-period deficit to stave off playoff elimination.

Jaromir Jagr and Kevin Stevens scored their first playoff goals to reignite Pittsburgh’s offense and help the Penguins avoid what would be their second consecutive early round ouster.

Washington, which again used rookie goaltender Byron Dafoe instead of Don Beaupre, leads the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series, 3-2.
