BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Toe Injury Sidelines Mets’ Gooden

Dwight Gooden, the ace of the New York Mets’ staff, will be sidelined at least four weeks because of an injured toe. The injury to his big right toe was discovered Monday during an MRI exam. An MRI on Bobby Bonilla showed the Met third baseman has a strained ligament in his left shoulder, and his playing status is day to day.

The New York Yankees designated left-hander Bob Ojeda for reassignment. The Yankees had given Ojeda, 36, an opportunity to make the team in spring training, one year after a boating accident killed two of his teammates with the Cleveland Indians and injured Ojeda. Ojeda had no decisions and a 24.00 ERA in two starts with the Yankees.

The St. Louis Cardinals put right-hander Mike Perez on the 15-day disabled list because of a muscle strain in his right shoulder. Perez is tied with the Florida Marlins’ Bryan Harvey for the National League lead with six saves. Willie Smith, 26, who leads the American Assn. in saves with seven, was called up from triple-A Louisville.

Toronto Blue Jay pitchers Dave Stewart and Todd Stottlemyre were charged for their part in a scuffle with police outside a Tampa, Fla., nightclub Feb. 20. Stewart and Stottlemyre were charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. The third-degree felony charges were filed by the Hillsborough state attorney’s office. No arraignment date was set.

Toronto Blue Jay Manager Cito Gaston was suspended for three games by the American League for bumping umpire Rick Reed during a game against the Angels on April 15. Gaston will continue managing while he appeals. . . . Oddibe McDowell, Texas’ No. 1 draft pick 10 years ago, was called up by the Rangers from triple-A Oklahoma City. . . . The Baltimore Orioles sent struggling Brad Pennington to triple-A Rochester and recalled right-hander Mike Oquist from Rochester. Pennington gave up eight earned runs in his last 3 1/3 innings.
