LOMITA : $65,000 Cleanup Set at Former Truck Repair Site

Share

The owner of a former truck maintenance yard in Lomita is cleaning up oil and gas residue at the site, a spokesman said this week.

John M. Shubin will pay $65,000 for the cleanup in an area on 242nd Street near Eshelman Avenue that is primarily residential, a spokesman said. The cleanup is expected to last through the summer.

Kenneth Smith, a specialist in hazardous materials, said oil and gas had leaked into the ground from vehicles parked and repaired on the lot. Although the site poses only a minor health hazard, county officials said, the soil must be cleaned to prevent future problems.

Parents should tell their children not to play on the property, which is fenced and posted with no trespassing signs, Smith said. Shubin is the former owner of John M. Shubin Inc., a Torrance-based trash-hauling company that used the lot as a maintenance yard.

Last year, complaints from neighbors about noise and other problems forced the company to move its operations from the half-acre site.
