Armijo Returns to Ring Tonight
After a year layoff, Huntington Beach’s John (The Fighting Lifeguard) Armijo is returning to the ring in tonight’s 10-round main event at the Irvine Marriott Ballroom.
Armijo’s last fight, in May, 1993, was a loss to super-welterweight Kenny Lopez in a 12-round decision. Since then, Armijo (14-7 with six knockouts) has dropped 11 pounds, and he will fight Chuck Goossen of North Hollywood at 143 pounds, three pounds over the lightweight limit. Goossen, a cousin of promoter Dan Goossen, is 6-1 with five knockouts and is 10 years younger than Armijo, 32.
The five-fight undercard features middleweight Rodney Toney (11-0 with five knockouts) of Campo against Irvine’s Luis Mejia (6-5) in a six-round bout.
In another undercard fight, Los Angeles junior lightweight Leonard Fiqueirof is taking on San Diego’s Bryan Cimicata, who is making his pro debut. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are priced at $25, $30 and $35 and can be purchased at the ballroom.
