With tickets, parking, refreshments and a souvenir for the kids, a family of four pays an average of $168 to attend a National Basketball Assn. game.

The same family would lay out $199.84 for a Lakers game with all the trimmings; for the Clippers, the price tag is $157.82, according to the same survey by Team Marketing Report, a sports business publication in Chicago.

Average expenses for a family of four for a game at Dodger Stadium--including two beers, four hot dogs, four soft drinks, two caps, two programs and parking--are $90.73, according to the same company. It will cost only 50 cents less to watch the Angels at Anaheim Stadium.

These prices include liberal snacks and souvenirs and are not based on the cheapest tickets and parking, but still, if the cost of pro sports makes you ponder the merits of sitting home and watching championship bowling on TV, take heart.

The Times surveyed prices charged by 14 successful high school and college teams and by the Hollywood Park and Santa Anita racetracks. A family of four bringing its own snacks could attend these events for costs ranging from absolutely nothing to $22.

Here are a number of ways to see sporting events without going bankrupt.
