PACOIMA : Recreation Center Will Open in Park
A recreation center offering everything from karate exhibitions to dance courses is set to open in Pacoima’s Paxton Park by early June, park officials said.
The facility, on 10736 Laurel Canyon Blvd., will probably be named the Ritchie Valens Community Center, said Paxton Park Director Art Gomez. Valens, who hailed from Pacoima, was a rock star.
“It’s basically going to be a recreation center to meet the needs of the community, from preschool to adults,” Gomez said.
The center will include a preschool, a gym, a stage and sound system, and possibly a day-care facility, Gomez said.
It will house dance classes for children and adults, karate and boxing classes and exhibitions, youth and adult basketball and volleyball leagues, and will be used as a multicultural conference center.
Pacoima’s new Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will also meet at the center once a month, Gomez said.
