THE REGION : Mayors Will Make 15th Bid to Fill AQMD Seat

Share

Mayors of San Gabriel Valley cities today will make another attempt--the 15th, to be exact--to elect a representative to the Southland’s air quality board.

The valley’s cities, as well as 32 other cities ringing Los Angeles, have been without a representative on the Southern California Air Quality Management District since February.

Mayors from the cities will meet today in the hopes that one candidate will garner the votes of two-thirds of 63 cities. The AQMD seat has been vacant since February, when Henry Morgan was forced to resign after being recalled from the Covina City Council.

On April 7, Pomona Councilwoman Nell Soto got 59% of the city’s votes, but La Canada Flintridge Councilwoman Joan Feehan continued to receive the support of enough cities to block Soto’s election.

The mayors rejected a plan to allow additional candidates to join the race, blocking the nomination of Monrovia Councilwoman Lara Blakely.
