A security guard who shot and killed a teen-age resident in Venice’s crime-plagued Oakwood neighborhood was booked on suspicion of murder, a detective said Thursday.

Ernest Rhodes, 31, was arrested about 11 p.m. Wednesday in the death of Rafael Murillo. The shooting occurred outside an apartment building where the youth lived in the 900 block of 5th Avenue, Detective Pat Anguiano of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Station said.

Murillo died at UCLA Medical Center. Rhodes, who was working as a uniformed guard at the apartment complex, was licensed to carry a gun, Anguiano said. The shooting occurred during an argument, but Anguiano said it was not immediately known what sparked the dispute.
