Top-seeded Todd Martin breezed past Christian Bergstrom, 6-1, 6-1, becoming the only seeded player to win a match at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Clay Court Classic at Pinehurst, N.C.

Second-seeded MaliVai Washington, No. 4 Richey Reneberg and No. 6 Luiz Mattar of Brazil were ousted on courts slowed by rain.

Washington was eliminated by Jared Palmer, 6-2, 6-1; Reneberg fell to Franco Davin, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, and Mattar lost to Mark Woodforde, 6-1, 6-1.

Martin’s domination was so complete that Bergstrom joked that the top-seeded player was trying to make a quick getaway to a nearby golf course.

“If you’re playing golf today, I want to go with you,” Bergstrom said after one shot skipped by him and landed just inside the baseline.

Martin responded by taking a golf swing with his racket.
