Bruins No-Hit Santa Clara Twice

Share

Dee Dee Weiman and B’ann Burns pitched back-to-back no-hitters as UCLA swept a softball doubleheader from Santa Clara at Easton Stadium in Westwood on Saturday.

Both pitchers lost perfect games when they hit batters. Both runners were caught stealing.

Weiman (17-5), a senior, struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced in an 8-0 victory in the first game, which was halted in the fifth inning because of the 8-run mercy rule. It was her fifth no-hitter this season and 15th in her career at UCLA.

She lost her perfect game when she hit Jeannie Cocconi.

In the second game, freshman Burns (16-5) struck out eight and got support from the Bruin defense in her first no-hitter, a 7-0 victory.

The only baserunner for Santa Clara was Alisa Giovannini, who was hit by a pitch.

Janae Deffenbaugh provided enough offense to win both games, with doubles in each. She finished five for eight in the doubleheader, driving in three runs and scoring four for UCLA (34-10).

Jessica Acord pitched both games for Santa Clara (12-52).
