Two suburban police departments and the MTA’s transit police have received federal grants to hire a total of 20 new officers, President Clinton announced on Thursday.

The Hawthorne Police Department, the South Gate Police Department and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority were among 142 agencies to share $74 million in federal money in the latest round of community policing grants, which Clinton called a down payment on his campaign pledge to put 100,000 new officers on the nation’s streets within the next five years.

The grants were the final round of disbursements since Clinton took office, and are expected to fund the hiring and training of 1,001 additional police officers nationwide.

The MTA won the largest grant, a more than $1.1-million award that will fund a dozen new transit police officers.

Hawthorne was awarded a $532,980 grant that will fund six new officers and South Gate received $199,030 for two new officers.
